Joshua Mills
I’m an Energy & Carbon Analyst proficient in the development of national energy models using PowerBI and Python. I quantify the impact of markets, policies & international relations on commodities and the energy transition, with a primary focus on Great Britain’s net-zero pathway to 2050. My work revolves around renewables, nuclear and energy storage - with bespoke research on using batteries to mitigate national grid frequency fluctuations – alongside the creation of interactive dashboards that compare national decarbonisation transition pathways against the NESO Future Energy Scenarios.

UK Solar Community Project
Long-term renewable financial software designed to bring the benefits of renewables to council-owned social housing.
Currently being designed in Python, this software's focus is on producing the long-term financial data of roof-top solar, battery storage and excess electricity resale for councils. Councils can utilise this information to designate suitable housing sites for development, leading to 15+ year contracts where excess funds are split between councils, private investors and the community to slowly bring steady cash flow and the electriciation of neighbourhoods without high upfront personal costs.

PowerBI & Python GB Net Zero models, developed to produce consumer insights into battery & hydrogen storage and renewables.
A continuation of my MScR and Carbon Analysis role at the University of Bath, designed to take open-source information on renewable trajectories and battery/hydrogen storage and project insights into net zero pathways for GB between 2023 to 2050.

A connection platform designed to join breakthrough academic ideas to industrial partners, helping spur innovation.

· Developing back-to-back voltage source converters using Simulink and MATLAB software
· Conducting nuclear fusion material research, including the design of tensile strength tests for P-91 steel alloys
· Produced reports outlining the economic viability of low-carbon technologies for Great Britain
· Building PowerBI and Python models to visualise the UK’s energy transition
I have also conducted research, written reports and derived policy recommendations on the global energy transition and pitched these recommendations to panels of international experts at academic conferences fostering collaboration with US institutions. I am deeply committed to the low-carbon economy and have extensive experience producing reports and presentations for governments and companies on renewables, consumer behaviour, and energy storage.

Software Experience
Excel - Advanced experience managing large datasets from sources such as Gridwatch Templar. Used to process and analyse energy data for net-zero scenario modelling, feeding into Python and PowerBI dashboards.
PowerBI - Designed and developed interactive dashboards to visualise Great Britain’s energy transition. Created user-friendly reports featuring clear graphs, charts, and tables accessible to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Python - Applied across multiple energy and engineering projects, including:
· Creating a nuclear submarine wireless communication platform for internal systems to reduce wiring complexity
· Power system modelling and analysis using PyPSA for renewable grid connections and frequency mitigation
· Development of energy transition pathway models using open-source data, generated 13 scenarios all compared to NESO Future Energy Scenarios.
· Building interactive dashboards and analytical tools
· App development for financial literacy apps and connection platforms
MATLAB & Simulink - Designed back-to-back voltage source converters (soft open points) in Simulink to integrate distributed renewable generators into the Scottish grid. Developed and validated mathematical models for voltage source converter performance.
Workplace Skills
Public Speaking - Presented complex topics to panels of experts, including on modelling long-term transition pathways for national grids at the University of Bath’s Sustainability Showcase in 2025. Here connections were made with researchers in California for future collaboration.
Conference Experience – Prepared material for Babcock’s involvement in the “Digital Solutions for the Fourth Industrial Revolution” conference, and worked alongside the bidding team to produce marketing material for the Combined Naval Event (stands, brochures, models and interactive displays)
Innovative Ideas – I’ve had experience developing niche engineering solutions into presentable material, further developing these ideas into prospective plans and business models. Examples include my community solar initiative which was first presented during the Babcock Sparks awards process, and again during the University of Bath’s entrepreneurial competition where I was delighted to win first place and secure funding for my on-going research.
